 Shibu Cho

Sensei Clive Stewart (4th Dan)

Chibu Cho of Genbukan Ninpo Bugei in South Africa

Chibu Cho means person in charge of an area. The title it is awarded in Genbukan Martial Arts by Grandmaster Tanemura Shoto to someone who is his direct student and has passed 4th Dan or higher.

I have been training in various Martial arts since I was nine years old. My goal in Martial arts is to be able to protect myself without having to change my character or nature.

From Grandmaster Tanemura Shoto I learnt that physical technique is just a part of Martial arts and must be balanced with Spiritual training. Of this, to me, Mu-Shin, or a quiet spirit / mind along with Ha-shodo is very important and hard to learn. However, the Martial Art must keep true to its roots and also develop the ability to protect oneself under pressure and stress. My understanding is that what I practise is Bu-Do. I was taught that the meaning of Bu-Do is to stop the attack.

Tanemura Sensei taught me to keep training in such a way as to develop the spirit where the Martial Artist is not over worried about knocking down or throwing the attacker but to rather keep a clear heart, being content to just protect and let the time to retaliate happen naturally.
